Halikounas, often called Chalikounas, is a vast sandy beach on the south west coast of
Corfu, right on the edge of
Lake Korission. It’s around 30km south of the capital and that’s about a 45 minute drive.
The closest village is probably
Agios Georgios South as the crow flies but to drive it you have to go all the way round the lake which takes about 25 minutes. It’s a shorter drive from
Messonghi at around 20 minutes. It is possible to walk from Agios Georgios south but it’s over 4km along Issos beach so not for the fainthearted.
Halikounas beach has soft golden sand with some rocks here and there. There’s a couple of tavernas one at the start and one in the middle. Around the tavernas you’ll find the organised sections with sunbeds and umbrellas to hire. There’s also a Kite club close to the middle of the beach where you can learn to Kite surf. The rest of this massive beach is left open to simply lay out a towel and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Halikounas beach is perfect for kids, there’s plenty of space for them to build sand castles, dig massive holes and make a lot of noise without annoying other people. The sea also stays quite shallow so they can play in the warm water safely too.
This is the perfect beach for those that enjoy a stroll, you can walk the full 2.5km stretch of the beach or take a wander round Lake Korisison if you prefer.
The southern end of Halikounas beach is often used by nudists, as it’s such a quiet beach, particularly down that end away from the tavernas it’s a nice, private area to get that all over tan.
