Mouse Island, otherwise known as Pontikonisi is a small island off the east coast of
Corfu just south of the airport. It’s a little under 10km from
Kerkyra and around a 20 minute drive.
The island gets it’s name because the white stone steps that lead up to Pontikonisi monastery look like a mouse's tail from the main land. Some websites confuse it with
Vlacherna Monastery which is in the same bay but doesn’t have the lush green vegetation and the white stairs that makes mouse island so distinctive.
The island is a short boat ride from the mainland and is a good peaceful place for a wander, you can visit the monastery, have a refreshing Mythos from the cafe, buy some local arts and crafts from the shop or simply sit on the wall and take in the scenery and watch the world go by.
The boat trip takes just a few minutes and runs back and forth every 20 minutes and if you’re lucky you might even see dolphins on the boat trip over. You get the boat from the marina area close to where the Vlacherna Monastery causeway meets the mainland and you’ll find ample parking in the area if required.
