The New Fortress is a Venetian castle in
Kerkyra and was built at the top of St. Marks hill. The views from the castle are amazing especially at sunrise or sunset. Keep in mind that there are a lot of steps and walking around but you can always rest in the café at the top where you can get some fresh squeezed orange juice or a snack.
Unfortunately there are no tourist information signs so you’ll not be informed on what sections of the castle are or were and a lot of the internal chambers are closed. Also, the grounds are not looked after regularly so you may find the grass quite long. Having said that it’s still an impressive and imposing castle that is in good condition, entrance is free so there’s no harm in spending some time wandering round.
It's also possible to climb the stairs to the very top of the castle, this isn’t always open but if it is and you have the stamina then this is where you’ll find the best views of the old town. There's a car park close to the entrance that costs 3€ for the day but there’s still a walk to the entrance itself.
Other attractions in the area include
Saint Spyridon church,
Spianada Square,
The Liston,
The old Fortress and much more so if you want to make The new fortress part of a days of sight seeing in Kerkyra then there's plenty to keep you busy.
