Paleokastritsa Monastery is a small and Picturesque monastery located towards the north west of
Corfu island. It’s around 25km from the capital
Corfu Town and that would take about 40 minutes to drive.
As with most Greek churches there’s no entrance fee to get in but donations are welcomed. There’s a place to light a candle in memory of loved ones that are no longer with us and space to sit and quietly reflect. Inside you’ll also see some colourful artwork both on the walls and ceiling. It’s expected that your shoulders and legs are covered before you can enter the monastery but they can provide skirts and scarfs to cover up.
Outside you’ll enjoy the small courtyards with fragrant plants in terracotta pots and take in the spectacular views whilst wandering around in the calm and peaceful atmosphere, it certainly makes a welcome change from the tourist hot spots of the island.
Paleokastritsa Monastery is walk-able from
Paleokastrita town, it would take 10-15 minutes from the beach area. If visiting from further away then there’s parking available, either around the beach or further up the hillside if you don’t want to walk. Also in the area is
Angelokastro so the two can be combined in a day trip.
