Achilleion is a palace in the east of
Corfu, approximately 10km south of
Kerkyra and set in beautiful, well kept grounds. It was built by Elisabeth of Bavaria who was also known as Sissi, hence the name, Sissi’s Palace.
Achilleion’s location offers a panoramic view of Kerkyra to the north as well as the entire southern part of the island.
In the grounds you’ll find lots of statues, many depicting Achilles as well as gardens that you can easily spend a lot of time wandering round. This is definitely on the must see list when in Corfu.
There is also a guided tour available, you pick up headphones at the entrance to the palace and as you walk round you’re informed about all the exhibits that you see along the way.
For those that like films, Achilleion was used in the 1981 James bond film For your eyes only as the location of the Corfu Casino, which is what it was used for at the time.
