The Castle Of Saint George is located off the main road that runs from
Argostoli down towards
Skala but it can be a difficult drive with a couple of hairpin turns to negotiate before you arrive.
Once you get there you’ll find a small free car park, if it’s full then you can park on the road. There’s also a couple of tavernas for refreshments. The castle is in a spectacular location and offers amazing views over the island, on a good day you can even see Zakynthos and mainland Greece.
The castle has no guide and there isn’t much to see other than the ruined walls but still worth a visit for the sense of history and the fantastic views over the whole of
Kefalonia. Just remember that it will be very hot up there in the midday sun, there is also some uneven ground so wear walking shoes and not flip flops. If you’re taking kids then keep a close eye on them as there are some areas where the fencing isn’t great and they could slip down.
The Castle Of Saint George is open from June to September and the opening hours are 8.30 – 15.00 except on Mondays when it’s closed completely. Recently a few people have been finding that it’s closed when it should be open so it’s probably worth checking before taking the drive up there, especially if you’re coming from one of the resorts further afield. Another way to get there is to go on an organised coach trip, that way you know it’ll be open and you don’t have to drive yourself.
