About Saint Gerasimos Monastery

Saint Gerasimos Monastery is just off the main road a few miles out of Argostoli. It’s a large religious site dedicated to Saint Gerasimos who the Kefalonians believe protects and heals them.

The monastery houses many religious artefacts and also has the body of the saint in a small chapel in the garden. The monastery is large and impressive but still retains that tranquil atmosphere that you’d expect from a religious site. The gardens are a lovely place to wander round and relax in.

St Gerasimos Monastery is open to visitors but check opening times as it is sometimes closed in the mornings. When visiting you must wear clothes that cover your arms and legs, a simple wrap to cover shoulders and legs is usually enough.

Like a lot of the older buildings on Kefalonia the Church was ruined by the earthquake in 1953, and rebuilt by local residents.
