Agios Dionysios church, sometimes also known as San Dennis is located in the centre of
Zakynthos Town, on the water front and close to the harbour.
It’s hard to hear the Greek name Dionysios and not think of the ancient Greek god Dionysus, ultimate overseer of drunken revelry, but rest assured the Church of Agios Dionysios is anything but a hotbed of ritual madness.
The 16th century monk and archbishop is canonised as the saint of forgiveness and, more importantly, the patron saint of
Zakynthos Island. His beautifully adorned temple in the island’s capital city is a beacon for religious pilgrims and history-loving tourists alike.
Pay homage at his silver tomb and take in some of the fantastic Byzantine style works of art that you’ll find inside this peaceful little haven from the busy town outside. As with most Greek churches there’s no bare shoulders allowed inside and no photography inside either.
