Eleftherotria Monastery is located close to the middle of
Zakynthos island, it’s around 10km south west from
Zakynthos Town the islands capital and just 7km north west of
Laganas.
The palatial Monastery of Eleftherotria is one of the most modern, having been established in 1962, and also one of the most picturesque, holding stunning panoramic views over the village of Lagopodo. From this viewpoint, you’ll catch glimpses of surrounding olive groves, the
Laganas Bay, and
Marathonisi Islet across the deep blue waters of the Ionian Sea.
Additionally, this is one of the remaining active monasteries on the island, with several nuns residing within its red and white walls. Access to the monastery is limited, it’s only open between 8.30-12.00 and 16.00-19.00. Entrance is free but it’s not complete access, several areas are off limits. Also, to get in you have to be dressed appropriately, this means not having bare shoulders or knees.
Once inside you’ll see some fantastic frescoes and icons as well as a courtyard garden with potted plants and flower beds. There’s some gorgeous golden mosaics in archways and a gift shop that sells items that were hand made by the nuns that live in Elefterotria monastery.
Getting to the monastery is simple as it’s just off the main road that takes you through Lagopodo and Macherado. There’s a brown and yellow tourist information sign that points you in the right direction so you shouldn’t miss it.
