Antimachia castle is a huge fortress located close to the middle of Kos
island, not far from both Antimachia
village and Kardamena
. It’s around 30 minutes drive from the islands capital Kos town
The castle itself is absolutely massive, it covers an area of around forty thousand square metres and if you were to walk round the whole perimeter it would be around a kilometre.
On the outside you are greeted by the imposing walls as you approach, there’s no entrance fee and you enter via the wooden walk way. Once inside there’s a couple of small chapels but unfortunately not much else to see, there’s also no signs to inform visitors what they’re looking at or what might have been there in the past.
The interior is often pretty overgrown and there’s some areas that could be dangerous, particularly for youngsters or those with mobility issues so keep an eye on anyone who may be at risk.
The views from inside the castle are spectacular, on a clear day you can see all the way out to sea and even over to neighbouring islands.
Getting to the castle is easy as there’s a good tarmac road leading all the way up to it and there’s more than enough room out the front to park up, parking is free.
