Saint Archangel Michael Monastery is a huge religious site on the south coast of
Thassos, it's around 35km from the islands capital
Limenas and that's about a 45 minute drive.
The monastery is beautifully decorated and maintained with flowers, shrubs and trees as well as immaculately kept stone buildings and courtyards. Saint Archangel Michael Monastery is also perched on the cliff edge meaning there's stunning views out over the Aegean sea and the Thassos coastline.
As with most religious buildings in Greece, you are expected to cover up when entering so no bare shoulders or knees. A simple shawl or sarong wrapped around you is sufficient.
The site is open from 8.00 until 14.30 when it closes until 16.00 when it reopens and stays open until 19.30. Unfortunately as it's a working monastery some parts are off limits but what you can see is well worth the visit.
Finding the monastery is easy, its right off the main coastal road that runs round the island and it's well signposted. There's a small car park with space for a dozen or so cars at the western end of the building, it's a popular place so that's not always enough and parking can be tricky.
