Agios Markos, otherwise known as Saint Marks is a church in the heart of
Zakynthos Town and right next to
Solomos MuseumAgios Markos is the only Catholic church on the Island, it has a sunny yellow facade and sits in the corner of Saint Markos Square, where the Tree of Freedom honours the island’s independence from Venetian rule.
The church itself was originally founded in the 16th century as the chapel of a monastery for Franciscan monks, but the building you see today is a smaller reconstruction erected after the devastating earthquake of 1953.
