Our Zakynthos sight seeing guide is designed to help holiday makers as well as travellers decide which of the islands sights and attractions they want to visit whilst on the island.

If you’re one of those people who simply goes to a nice hotel in a village with a beach and spends your whole week either in the pool or in the sea then this page is probably unnecessary.

However, if you are someone that wants to see the cultural sights and learn about the history of the island then this is the page for you. This is also the page for you if you have kids that you want to keep entertained as it’ll help you to find things to do that they might enjoy.

The map above will help you to see where each attraction is on the island so if you know where your staying you can find local sights, if your not sure where to stay yet then you can look for places to stay near some of the sights you want to see.

Historical sites in Zakynthos

Zakynthos has some fantastic old churches but probably the best historical site is the Bohali venetian castle, it has the remains of several buildings within the grounds and it's not far from the capital so easy to get to from the most popular resorts in the south east.

Kids activities in Zakynthos

Zakynthos is always popular with families and one of the most visited attractions is Water village which is a water park close to Zakynthos Town, it has a lazy river, multiple slides and a child and baby area too.

Another option for the youngsters is a trip to the turtle rescue centre which is a lovely place to take the kids to learn about these beautiful creatures and what the locals are doing to help conserve the species.

There’s also a virtually endless supply of great kid friendly beaches and hotels with pools so you won’t be short of ways to tire them out.

Agia Mavra Church

Agia Mavra, also sometimes known as the Church of St Thomas and Mavra is found in the village of Macherado and consists of an impressive Venetian bell tower and is strikingly decorated with jewels, gold, and remarkable frescoes.

Agios Dionysios Church

Agios Dionysios church, sometimes also known as San Dennis is located in the centre of Zakynthos Town, on the water front and close to the harbour. it's a beacon for religious pilgrims and history-loving tourists alike.

Agios Georgios Krimnon Monastery

Agios Georgios Krimnon monastery, also known as St George Kremnon is the perfect spot to get away from the crowds and enjoy some calm and serenity. It has a beautiful courtyard with potted plants and views out over Navagio Beach and the Ionian Sea.

Agios Markos (Saint Marks) Church

Agios Markos, otherwise known as Saint Marks is a church in the heart of Zakynthos Town, It was originally founded in the 16th century and is the only Catholic church on the Island, it has a sunny yellow facade and sits in the corner of Saint Markos Square,

Agios Nikolaos Church

The delightful little Agios Nicholaos church is a whitewashed building with red doors and gates. It's found on the south east corner of Zakynthos, just above St Nicholas beach and boasts spectacular views of the Ionian sea and beach below.

Agricultural Museum

A stone’s throw away from Alykes on the east coast of Zakynthos is the tiny village of Pigiadakia, where the Agricultural Museum has been informing visitors since 1998 on how the islands farming and crop cultivation was done over the years.

Anafonitria Monastery

Anafonitria Monastery is located in the northwestern region of Zakynthos island. First founded in the 15th century, it features a tower and an entrance archway leading to a stone courtyard that's a beautiful and serene place to spend some time.

Askos Stone Park

Askos Stone Park near Volimes has over a hundred thousand self-sown plants as well as hundreds of free-roaming animals, including goats, deer, pigs, peacocks, raccoons, donkeys and much more, many of which you can interact with and feed.

Blue Caves

The Blue Caves were discovered in 1897 and lie on the northern tip of the island, just below Skinari Lighthouse. Venture inside to see the sun light reflecting of the Ionian sea and glistening back of the white cave walls, this is where the name Blue Caves comes from.

Bohali Venetian Castle

Bohali Venetian Castle is located in the hills above Zakynthos Town, inside you’ll see the remains of prisons, churches, and many other buildings, unfortunately there’s not a huge amount left as the majority of the castle was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake.

Byzantine Art Museum

The Byzantine Art Museum, also known as Zakynthos Museum is found at the north western end of Solomos square in Zakynthos Town. The exhibitions include several artefacts from around the island plus a model of Zakynthos town before the earthquake.

Cameo Island

Cameo Island is a tiny little island off the south coast of Zakynthos. It's just 100m east to west and around 60m from north to south. Due to it’s small size there’s not a great deal to see or do, there is a small beach as well as a taverna with great views of the coastline.

Damianos Caves

The Damianos caves are found close to the village of Agalas, it's a unique two-storey cave that’s filled with stalactites and stalagmites, there isn’t a great deal to see as the cave is quite shallow so there’s nothing to really explore inside but still worth a look.

Eleftherotria Monastery

Eleftherotria Monastery was established in 1962 and is one of the remaining active monasteries, with several nuns residing within its red and white walls. It's decorated with potted plants and offers spectacular panoramic views.

Helmi’s Natural History Museum

A visit to Helmi’s Natural History Museum in the small, central village of Agia Marina will uncover the remarkable flora and fauna indigenous to the area with over 1,500 1,500 samples of birds, fish, shells, fossils, rocks, and minerals.

Ioannis Prodromos Monastery

Ioannis Prodromos Monastery lies just north of Mount Melissa and west of Alykes. Though the monastery was originally founded in the 1500s, it dissolved for a period and was later re-established in the 17th century at the hands of Anthony Marinos and George Sapatis.

Marathonisi Islet

Marathonisi is a tiny island that’s roughly 2.5 kilometres off the coast. Known as Turtle Island, due to the fact that it's home to the precious, endangered Caretta Caretta turtles, also known as loggerhead turtles – the island is even vaguely turtle shaped!

Milanio Maritime Museum

The Milanio Maritime Museum is very well placed just 6km outside the capital in Tsilivi. The museum was founded by the Greek painter Antonis Milanos and exhibitions include paintings, photographs, ship models, uniforms, weapons and tools

Panagia Keriotissa Church

Panagia Keriotissa is a bright yellow church in the mountainous village of Keri. Nestled in a park on the southern side of town, this house of worship dedicated to the Assumption commands spectacular views and delights visitors with its cobbled courtyard.

Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery

Skopiotissa Monastery is found up Mount Skopos just south of Argassi. Constructed in 1624, this remarkable Byzantine church is the only religious site on the island with an Aegean-style dome though much of the monastery is now ruined,

Solomos Museum

Solomos Museum is located in St. Marks Square in Zakynthos Town, it opened in 1959 and honours the beloved poets Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos. Inside you’ll find paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, sculptures, and pottery.

Spiliotissa Monastery

Spiliotissa Monastery was built in the 16th century and surrounded by pine forests and olive groves. It's devoted to “Our Lady of the Cave,” so called for its close proximity to a cave near the village of Orthonies where an icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered.

Turtle Rescue Centre

The turtle rescue centre is in the Vasilikos peninsula on the south east corner of Zakynthos, founded in 1991, the turtle rescue and information centre is a place dedicated to the protection of the turtles that nest on the beaches in the area.

Water Village

Water Village is a water park just east of Zakynthos town in the village of Sarakinado. It features a number of slides, from racing slides to ring slides, a dedicated kids and babies area as well as a lazy river and much more, it's perfect for all the family.
