Vlychada beach is on the south coast of
Santorini, it's around 10km from the islands capital
Fira and that's about a 20 minute drive.
The beach is a good size, it's around 25 metres from back to front but stretches out for over a kilometre. It has the usual black volcanic sand that you expect from Santorini and it's actually one of the better beaches as there aren't too many pebbles or rocks.
Vlychada beach is picturesque place as it's surrounded by impressive rocky cliffs and has a charming harbour and marina at the southern end where you can watch the yachts and fishing boats coming and going. This is also where you'll find some room to park as well as a number of restaurants, hotels, bars and shops.
There's a few rows of umbrellas and sun loungers available to rent at the harbour end but there's also plenty of empty space left free as you head north away from the harbour so it’s easy to find a bit of room to yourself if that's what you want.
There's a taverna set above the beach at the harbour end so you can get refreshments throughout the day, it also plays a bit of music but it's not too loud or overpowering. There's no water sports or pedalo hire so the more active amongst you may get bored.
If you fancy a stroll then you can head north west along the beach and you’ll come to
Eros beach that has a nice modern taverna where you can stop for refreshments before heading back. Just be aware, if you decide to take this walk that nudists often use the area between the two beaches.
