Maries is a traditional mountain side village close to the centre of
Thassos island. Getting to Maries from the capital would take around 45 minutes or an hour and a half if you take the more scenic mountain roads.
Maries is a delightful little village to visit, it’s somewhere you enjoy the natural beauty of the area. There are a few trails to walk round to make the most of the surroundings. This isn’t a tourist destination, there are no souvenir shops and only a couple of tavernas so not somewhere to spend your entire break but a lovely little place to have a wander round.
Although not a tourist destination, there are a couple of places to stay in Maries so if you’re the sort of person that likes a slow pace to your Greek island holiday and wants to get away from the crowds of the more popular tourist destinations then Maries could be a good choice.
If you'd like to stay in the area then have a look at the Maries page of booking.com
here. Alternatively find a great package holiday through Tui
here.
The nightlife in Maries is minimal, there's a small collection of restaurants where you can get a nice evening meal and a few drinks but there's not much more than that. If you're a party person then Maries is definitely not for you but if you enjoy a quiet night out in traditional Greek style surroundings then it's perfect.
As Maries is not on the coast there’s no beaches near by. If you head down the main road out of Maries you end up at
Skala Maries where there’s a beach (
Skala Maries Beach) and a bit more in the way of tourist facilities. This journey would take about 15 minutes in the car or just over 2 hours if you wanted to walk it.
