Vothonas is just to the south east of
Messaria close to the centre of
Santorini. It's just 3.5km from the islands capital
Fira and that would only take 5 to 10 minutes to drive.
Most people wouldn't choose to stay in Vothonas as it's simply too quiet but that'll be perfect for others. If that's you then there's actually a fair few hotels, mainly small villas, suites and apartments rather than the larger, 5* all inclusive style places.
Vothonas is a great place to visit, simply because of the unusual architecture of the buildings here. The village is built into the rock with many of the houses being part cave, part house which is certainly interesting and unusual.
There's a couple of tavernas in Vothonas which are great for for a snack or drink after a walk round the town. There's also a couple of shops but not a lot else, luckily you can easily go to Messaria if you need a cash machine or to hire a car.
There's also an impressive church called the church of St Anna that has an impressive bell tower and the usual pastel, white and blue colours that make the Cyclades churches so beautiful.
If you'd like to stay in the area then have a look at the Vothonas page of booking.com
here. Alternatively find a great package holiday through Tui
here.
Nightlife in Vothonas is pretty much non existent. You wont find late night bars, clubs or anything like that. You could make the 5 to 10 minute walk over to Messaria where there's a little more but still not a lot.
Vothonas has a wine museum where you'll learn about the history of wine making on the island with machinery and tools from the past as well as models and information. You can also do a wine tasting there and pick up a couple of local bottles from the shop too.
With Vothonas being close to the middle of the island, you can easily head east to the best beaches like
Karmari beach or west to the caldera to enjoy the views.
