Mount Ipsarion or Mount Ypsario is located just north of the centre of
Thassos island, it’s the tallest peak on the island and has a height of 1204 meters.
Mount Ipsarion is perfect for a hike, you can set off from
Panagia or
Potamia and the walk will take you around 2 to 3 hours, along the way you’ll get to take in the lush green vegetation of Thassos island and when you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the entire island and even the main land on a clear day. If you decide to do the hike, remember to wear some good shoes and take plenty of water.
There is also a 4×4 tour of the mountain available from most travel agents on the island which offers great views from the back of the car as well as some interesting information on the way round. The tour usually includes a stop at the monastery and ends with a BBQ and Greek salad.
If you don’t want to pay for the tour or make the walk yourself but you still want to enjoy the views then you can drive up the mountain in a hire car but a 4×4 is recommended, alternatively you can simply get a taxi to the top, you wont get the same sense of achievement that you would from hiking it but the views and photos are still the same.
