Makris Gialos beach is on the north east coast of
Zakynthos (Zante), up in the northern region of the island. It’s roughly 26km from the islands capital
Zakynthos Town which is about a 40 minute drive.
The beach is small at just 160m long and a narrow 15m at it’s widest. It’s pebble under foot so water shoes are recommended for those that don’t like walking on the stones. The water is crystal clear but does get deep quickly so not great for weak swimmers.
As Makris Gialos beach is so far from the capital and the more popular tourist regions on the south coast you’ll probably find it a little quieter, more peaceful and relaxing.
Makris Gialos has a small number of sun loungers available with some open space available too for those that prefer it that way. There’s no taverna on the beach itself but there’s two just above the beach, less than 100m away. You do have to cross the main road and go up some steps though.
Due to the large rock faces and hill side at either end and the wall at the rear of the beach you get some natural shade at various times of the day in certain spots so worth seeking out or avoiding depending on your preference.
Getting to Makris Gialos is straight forward, the road that brings you to the beach is the main coastal road and the beach is visible from that road so really easy to find. Parking is a bit more of a challenge as there’s no dedicated car park. There is some room around the tavernas and roadside parking is possible too.
Another great option from Makris Gialos is to go on a boat tour, there’s a kiosk by the beach where you can book to visit the
Blue Caves and
Navagio Beach.
