Lixouri is the second largest town in
Kefalonia and the central town of the Palliki peninsula. It’s around a 45 minute drive from the islands capital
Argostoli. Transfer times from Kefalonia airport will be at least an hour but probably more if you’re not the first drop off.
Another way to get to Lixouri is via the ferry from Argostoli which takes about 25 minutes and runs at least every hour and more frequently in high season. The ferry takes both vehicles and pedestrians so you don’t need a car to make the trip.
Lixouri is a large working town that has a lot to offer, it’s not as busy and bustling as Argostoli but not far off. It also has a much more Greek feel to it making it a good alternative to a purpose built resort like
Lassi.
The focus of Lixouri is around the harbour, sea front and the main square that’s surrounded by tavernas and restaurants, these serve up delicious freshly caught sea food and local delicacies with the hint of a sea view.
Within the town you’ll have a decent choice of restaurants and bars, they’re mostly in the vicinity of the harbour and square with outdoor seating and a buzzing atmosphere.
There’s not a huge selection of hotels in Lixouri, it’s got a few apartments and small hotels in the town itself as well as a couple of larger hotels with swimming pools on the outskirts.
As it’s a working town you’ll find all the normal facilities like shops, supermarkets, banks and ATMs as well as car hire outlets. If you fancy joining a boat trip or two whilst in Kefalonia then Lixouri is a great choice, there’s several options that leave from the harbour each day.
If you'd like to stay in the area then have a look at the Lixouri page of booking.com
here. Alternatively find a great package holiday through Tui
here.
Nightlife in Lixouri is decent, there’s a good amount of bars and you can often find ones staying open late with some impromptu dancing and singing.
Don’t expect to find much lively entertainment though, there’s cocktail bars but no clubs and nothing particularly raucous. Generally people tend to just pull up a chair at a restaurant, enjoy a few drinks with dinner and then watch the world go by with a few more drinks.
Lixouri is not ideal if you want to travel the island as you either have to get the ferry or take the long drive round the coast before heading for one of the other areas of the island.
The beach in Lixouri is a good size but not perhaps the nicest on the island, luckily you’re not far from
Xi beach which has gorgeous golden sand and lies on the southern tip of the Palliki peninsula.
One place that ‘s definitely worth visiting from Lixouri is the
Monastery of Kipoureon which is a short 20 minute drive, it’s incredibly scenic and sits right on the edge of the cliffs offering spectacular views.
