Karterados is a traditional village, slightly inland to the east of
Fira in
Santorini. It’s a short 5 minute drive or around a 20-30 minute walk from the capital. Transfer times from Santorini airport to Karterados will be around 10-15 minutes.
The village is made up of one main street that runs through the centre of the village and other narrow streets with traditional Cycladic buildings as well as cave houses built into the rocks.
The central square is home to a beautiful restored windmill and some restaurants, there are a few other restaurants around the village but not a massive selection.
There’s a good choice of accommodation dotted about around the village but don’t expect large scale hotels, it’s generally guest houses and and small hotels with just a handful of rooms each. You can find hotels with pools here though so could be a good option if that’s important to you.
If you need an ATM or to rent a car then both are available in Karterados, there’s also supermarkets, bakeries and coffee shops too.
If you'd like to stay in the area then have a look at the Karterados page of booking.com
here. Alternatively find a great package holiday through Tui
here.
Nightlife in Karterados is pretty low key but gets more lively as you head towards Fira including a couple of late night bars with music that stay open into the small hours and could be considered clubs.
Apart from that the main part of the village will be best for those that want a simple meal and a few drinks in a traditional Greek setting.
As Karterados is inland there’s no beach directly in the village itself, there is a beach called Karterados beach out on the east coast which is easy to get to, alternatively it’s not much further to either
Monolithos beach or
Exo Gialos beach.
Karterados has several whitewashed churches in and around the village and in particular the church of Agios Nikolaos is well worth a visit.
With such easy access to Fira you can make multiple trips to the capital to sample the beautiful sunsets and stunning views as well as taking in all the attractions that the main town has to offer including the
Museum of Prehistoric Thera, the
Santorini Cable Car between Fira and the old port below where you can book onto a
caldera cruise. Another option is to visit
Skaros Rock which is just north of Fira.
