Skaros rock is a natural rock formation on the edge of
Imerovigli, it’s a fantastic place for a hike where you’ll be rewarded with incredible views over the caldera and the hillside buildings of Imerovigli, the neighbouring towns of
Firostefani and
Fira as well as
Oia in the distance.
Part way round the hiking trail is a typical Cycladic church called Ekklisia Theoskepasti with it’s white washed walls and blue domed roof and doors it’s the perfect place to stop for a rest and to take a couple of photos.
Further up you reach the rock itself, it’s a little tricky to climb to the very top but if you are brave enough to climb up there then you’ll have unrestricted panoramic views that’ll take your breath away.
Skaros is also the site of an ancient castle and densely populated settlement that was built in the 15th century where the castle was vital in defending the island from pirates. Sadly, the years of volcanic activity and earthquakes have left nothing but ruins however you do get a sense of how Skaros used to be and it’s a fascinating insight into past life on
Santorini.
