Monolithos is a quiet region on the east coast of
Santorini right by the northern end of the airport. It's only 6km from the islands capital
Fira and that's around a 10 minute drive.
Monolithos gets it's name from the large rock (Monolith in Greek) where the church of Agios Ioannis stands, if you want to visit then it's on the eastern side of the airport close to the runway, you can walk it from the coast in around 10 minutes.
Calling Monolithos a resort is a bit of a stretch, it's more a collection of hotels around the beach and harbour. The hotels here are mainly villas or suites but there are a couple of larger hotels too. There's a small number of tavernas on the main road by the waterfront and a little supermarket too but no ATM, no car hire shops and no bakeries either.
Monolithos is best for people wanting to be away from the crowds but near the east coast beaches and perhaps those that like to watch the planes coming and going.
If you'd like to stay in the area then have a look at the Monolithos page of booking.com
here. Alternatively find a great package holiday through Tui
here.
As mentioned there's not a lot of restaurants and certainly no late night bars or clubs so the nightlife in Monolithos is low key.
Luckily, you can get to either Fira or
Kamari in less than 10 minutes by taxi so if you want a night out then both offer a lot more entertainment options.
There's not a lot in the area around Monolithos so things to do will probably be limited to the beaches in the area. You can easily get to
Vourvoulas beach,
Exo Gialos beach and
Karterados beach to the north and heading south you can get to
Agia Paraskevi beach,
Avis beach and
Kamari beach too.
